Description:

Please see homepage. Dupedit is a program for finding duplicate files. Give it files and folders, and dupedit will find all sets of identical files.

Dupedit is written for speed and accuracy: Because dupedit is not based on hashing, it skips reading the rest of a file when it no longer looks like an exact copy of another file, it never reads a byte twice, and when it finds identical files, you can be 100% certain that they are identical. Also, the syntax of its output tells which of them are physical copies (as opposed to sym/hardlinks, different paths to the same file, multiple mountpoints of the same filesystem, mount --bind, you name it). The latter is because files are internally identified by inode and device id.

Name: Dupedit aims to be the ultimate tool for editing duplicates, where editing means managing. The name may sound like an anglification of the Norwegian word «duppeditt», which means «little device that is difficult to name». And so it is: Initially, the name was fcmp, but that name was already taken. Luckily, dupedit is so much better, and a perfect name for what the program hopefully becomes.

Changelog:

version 5.5.1: Fix horrible makefile mistake that caused compilation failure for everyone except myself.

version 5.5: More useful -exec option, works on Windows.

version 5.4: Distinguishes between physical and false copies, will never work on Windows. I made a Qt GUI version of 5.4, but the perfectionist in me never finished that branch. Name changed from fcmp to dupedit. The ouput syntax from this version was designed specifically to be useful for writing a vidir-like editor interface.

version 5: The fifth complete rewrite of the program takes filesizes into account.

version 4: The fourth complete rewrite was the first working version. One of my early programming attempts before I learnt programming at university.
